Hometown Gilbert - Where are you from?
My husband, Mike & I have lived in Arizona for just a little over a year now. Although our apartment resides in Chandler, we have adopted Gilbert as our new Hometown. We love the vibrant town center and frequently drop into the local restaurants, shops and farmer's market. We recently enjoyed a sit down talk with Dewayne last week (door greeter at Joe's BBQ) and learned a little history of our favorite restaurant. Since arriving in AZ, the most frequent question we get is "Where are you from?" For laughs, Mike and I have resorted to saying "Gilbert or Chandler" and they always respond "You don't SOUND like you are from Arizona." We look at them puzzled and say "What does a true Arizonian sound like? We haven't met one yet." Seems like most everybody here is not "from here" and a good many of them are past residents of that unfortunate area of the country that resides over the Mason Dixon line up North. I haven't been privileged to speak to a Native American Indian yet, but I HAVE finally met someone who is a 4th generation Arizonian (1st generation doesn't count). The waitress whose great grandma has a street named after her (a sign of true Arizonaness) called everyone "shuge" (a shortened version of sugar) and "hon". Guess what, her accent sounded very similar to MINE! So there ya go, I'm from "around here" y'all.
